Description
- Design for a fountain
- Pen and brown ink and wash over black chalk;
bears later inscription in pencil, lower right: Dieterlin (?)
Provenance
Bears unidentified collector's mark, verso, stamped twice (L.3520)
Condition
The sheet has suffered somewhat. There is quite a large repaired tear running diagonally across the sheet from lower left corner upwards. There is also another repaired tear running across the lower left corner (both repairs are visible on the verso of the sheet). The medium has faded and the ink has sunk which has minimised the vibrancy of the fountain design. Overall surface dirt and light staining. There are remnants of blue backing paper attached to the verso of the sheet (visible on the recto when held up to the light). Although there are condition issues the quality of the penmanship is still visible and quite strong is certain passages.

Catalogue Note
Stylistically there are certain similarities with an elaborate fountain design executed in pen and brown ink by Jacopo Zucchi, in the Louvre's collection, Paris.1
