Catalogue Note
Luis Paret y Alcázar produced a number of works depicting various ports and harbours in Spain. Bilbao features in several of his works, including a magnificent canvas of 1784, in the National Gallery's collection in London.1 The present sheet is a particularly fresh and splendid view of the port of Bilbao, drawn within a decorative mount with accompanying inscription and a dedication to one of Paret's good friends, Joséf Patras. The high degree of finish, together with the inscription and dedication, indicate that this is a work of art in its own right rather than a preparatory study.
