Catalogue Note

The styles of Jacob van der Ulft and Jan de Bisschop, to whom this drawing was traditionally attributed, can be extremely hard to separate, and indeed Van der Ulft seems on occasion to have copied De Bisschop's drawings and prints.  The very flat application of the dark brown wash and the seemingly non-Dutch location depicted would seem in this case to favour an attribution to Van der Ulft.
