Catalogue Note
Like lots 102 and 103, this is one of the series of highly atmospheric landscape sketches that De Bisschop made in the region of The Hague, after he moved there in 1652 to take up his legal appointment at the court of the Stadholder. Located a couple of kilometres from the centre of The Hague, in the direction of Delft, Rijswijk was a peaceful spot, whose woods and country estates provided De Bisschop with many appealing subjects. Three other sketches made at Rijswijk were sold in Amsterdam in 20031, and one of those - unusually, rather elaborately signed - is as free and atmospheric in its execution as this exceptional, sparkling study.
1. Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 4 November 2003, lots 79, 81, 82.
