Description

  • pine / poplar / marble
  • 95cm. high, 201cm. wide, 100cm. deep; 3ft. 1½in., 6ft. 7in., 3ft. 3½in.
with a rectangular top above a frieze centred by the mask of Mercury flanked by ribbon-tied floral and fruiting swags flanking a neoclassical urn with swan neck handles on beaded fluted turned tapering legs on ball feet; decoration refreshed

Condition

In overall good conserved condition. Old minor marks, chips and scratches and some minor restorations to the veneered alabaster top commensurate with age. There are some losses to the veneer of the top eg 10x 3cm along front right edge, medium section chipped front left corner when facing eg 7x 2cm and a medium chip to the rear right corner and there is a minor section of infill along part of the front edge.There are some old minor losses to the decoration which are not too noticeable and can be touched up. There is a minor section of ribbon missing from the far left swag. There is evidence of old minor worm which appears no longer active. The table has been reblocked in the centre as well to support the weight of the top. There is a crack in the right wing of the mask of mercury and there has been a loss of his nose due to old worm damage.

Caroline Vincenti, Palaces of Rome, London, 1997, p. 116  illustrates the dining room with a pair of centre tables with an upper tier and with bowed sides identically carved in white and gilt which must have been en suite to the offered table.
