Condition

The canvas has a rather firm relining, the paint surface is fairly dirty and the varnish is somewhat discoloured. The painting is in overall good condition. There are some small areas of surface abrasion to the left and right of the sitter's head, and two tiny areas of loss on his collar and chest. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching to the lower margin and lower corners, but little other notable intervention.
