14-inch dial with engraved wheatear border, mask and scroll spandrels, signed Nicolaas Weylandt, Amsterdam, matted centre with susbsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, further sectors for month, day and season with symbols and ruling deities, ringed winding holes, the arch with a painted moon dial within a tune selection sector, the substantial three train movement with anchor escapement, Dutch striking on two bells, a 13ΒΌ-inch cylinder quarter chiming and playing a selection of tunes on a carillon of fourteen bells with twenty-six hammers, the case surmounted with a giltwood figure of Chronos connected to the escapement and flanked by two further giltwood figures of musicians, above a carved and moulded cornice, foliate pierced and engraved brass frets and brass hood pilasters, the shaped trunk door inset with a mercury barometer with engraved and signed pewter scale scale and a gilt-brass lenticel, the plinth with canted corners and inlaid with an ebony and ivory star, the whole veneered with well figured wood and inlaid with chequered banding
Condition
Dial in good clean condition, moon dial restored/repainted. Movement is complete and looks as though it would run but would benefit from a clean and fresh oil. Case in generally good clean restored condition throughout, figures re-gilt, old minor repairs, cracks and marks. With pendulum, three brass-cased weights, winder and case key.
