Description

  • Portrait of Prince Waldemar Christian of Denmark (1603–1647)
  • oil on canvas

Condition

After Sustermans: The canvas has been relined, the paint surface is slightly dirty, and the varnish is not overly discoloured. The painting is in overall good condition. There is a small loss and a scratch in the centre of the upper margin. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some minor retouching to the lower margin, but otherwise there is little intervention. German School, 18th century: The canvas is unlined, the paint surface is dirty, and the varnish is very faded. The painting is in moderate condition. There are areas of loss around all four margins, around the stretcher mark, and in the sitter's chest and face. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some retouching around the stretcher mark, but little other intervention.
