Description

  • After Hyacinthe Rigaud
  • Portrait of Frederick Augustus II, Elector of Saxony (1696–1763)
  • oil on canvas, in a giltwood frame
  • 80 x 64cm

Condition

The canvas has been relined, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is slightly discoloured. The painting is in overall fair condition. There is some evidence of wear in the darker pigments, predominantly in the foreground and parts of the sky, rather than in the figures themselves. The varnish fluoresces milkily under ultraviolet light, making it difficult to discern old intervention, but it is apparent that the dark folds in the red cloak have been strengthened, and there are two areas of retouching in the sky, either side of the sitter's head, perhaps to disguise the appearance of craquelure.
