Description

  • Portrait of Grafen Arswed Wittenberg, three-quarters length; Portrait of a man in armor with a red sash, half-length
  • both oil on canvas, both unlined

Condition

Portrait of Grafen Arswed Wittenberg: The canvas is unlined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured and faded. The painting is in overall poor condition. There is an extensive network of craquelure throughout the painting and much flaking, which has resulted in many small losses throughout. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching along all four margins and some strengthening in the darks of the background in the folds of the cloth, and in the breastplate of the sitter's armour. Portrait of a man in armour with a red sash: The canvas is unlined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured and faded. There are losses along the lower margin and in the upper left and right corners, as well as along the stretcher mark on the left-hand side. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some spot retouching in the sitter's face, notably to the left of his chin, and in his arm. There is also some restoration to a horizontal scratch, measuring approx. 4cm., lower right, around 4 cm. from the right-hand margin, as well as to an area of loss, upper left, measuring approx. 2 by 2 cm. In overall moderate condition.
