  • silver, sapphire
  • 9.5cm., 3 3/4 in high
rectangular with rounded corners, the lid applied with a medallion cast with the jugate profiles of King Constantine I and Queen Sophia of Greece on a matted ground within a sapphire frame, the reverse with dates in Greek: 15 October 1889 - 15 October 1914, above facsimile signatures, sapphire cabochon thumbpiece, match compartment with striker, stamped: Cartier / Paris / London/ New York, serial number C6662, 3e titre de Paris (tête d'aigle)

minor scratches to surface commensurate with use, two minor dents along back. 141.4gr.

Catalogue Note

Princess Sophia of Prussia married Crown Prince Constantine of Greece (Tino) on 15 October 1889. She was the daughter of Friedrich III, German Emperor, and Victoria, Princess Royal, eldest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Constantine came to the throne in March 1913 but was forced to abdicate inJune 1917. They lived in exile in Switzerland before being recalled to the throne in 1920. In 1922, however, Constantine was forced to abdicate again after being defeated by the Turks in 1922. He died the following year and Queen Sophia died in Frankfurt in 1932.
