Catalogue Note

From Thomas Wharton's remodelling of the medieval pele tower in the early 17th century to John Carr's grand stable block of the 1760s, Aske Hall has undergone a number of architectural changes over the years. In 1960 the architect Claud Phillimore, 4th Baron Phillimore, was instructed to adapt the house for life in the 20th century and beyond. One of the pair of lanterns is illustrated in situ the Great Hall following the 1960 remodelling, which replaced the two storey chamber with a single storey room.
