Catalogue Note

José Maria O’Neill was the head of a branch of the Irish O'Neill dynasty, O’Neills of Clanaboy, established in Portugal since the early 18th century. He was a very successful merchant based in Lisbon, being there Consul-General of Denmark, Greece and Belgium. He was made chevalier of the Order of Dannebrog by King Frederik VI of Denmark in 1839, who had sent him the present work as a sign of gratitude for his services to his country. Eckersberg first painted a similar version of King Frederik VI in 1819 which is currently held in the Royal Danish Collection.
