Description

  • Two portraits of cardinals, bust length
  • a pair, both oil on canvas, circular

Condition

The canvases both have firm relinings, the paint surfaces are dirty, and the varnish is discoloured. Much of the original impasto is still intact and the paintings are in overall fair condition. The former: inspection under ultraviolet light reveals fairly extensive retouching to the cardinal's vestments, and strengthening to the line of buttons. The latter: inspection under ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouching to the cardinal's vestments and beard, with some strengthening down the front seam.
