Description

  • Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist in a landscape
  • oil and gold leaf on canvas, octagonal with a paintedĀ tondo

Condition

The canvas has an old relining, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish has discoloured. It is in overall moderate condition. There is a hole, with losses around it (measuring approx. 1 by 3 cm.), in the centre of the canvas. There are losses around all margins, as well as scattered through the sky, below Christ'es left foot and to the left of his head. There is also a network of superficial scratches, centre left. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals strengthening to the darks of the Madonna's cloak and hair, the Baptist's camel hair, and to the landscape, centre left and right. There are scattered retouchings throughout the landscape and sky, and some areas of repaint to losses just above Christ's arm (measuring approx. 2 by 3 cm.), in the sky above (approx. 1 by 2 cm.), and to a vertical scratch (3 cm. long) in the buildings, centre left. There is also fairly extensive retouching to losses in the Baptist's chest and lower part of his face, in Christ's right arm and neck, and in the Madonna's left sleeve.
