Catalogue Note

Abraham Gorlaeus (or van Goorle), a friend of Scaliger, had amassed a very substantial collection of more than 13,000 classical coins, which were purchased after his death by Henry, Prince of Wales, although some were acquired by Queen Christina of Sweden. He also had a collection of ancient rings and gems, which were catalogued in his "Dactyliotheca", published in 1601.

The title-page border was also used for an edition with a letterpress title which was issued in Leiden by Henricus Haestens in 1607, with the same letterpress text and engraved plates. The privilege in this copy is dated Paris, 18 December 1604, and the dedication to Henry IV is dated 1609.
