Luke Ching

Born in Hong Kong in 1972, Ching received a Bachelor of Art degree from
The Chinese University of Hong Kong and a Master of Fine Art degree in
1998. Over the past two decades, Ching has participated in exhibitions and
residencies abroad including P.S.1 Contemporary Arts Center in New York,
Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery in the United Kingdom and Fukuoka Asian
Art Museum Residence Program in Japan. Over the course of his career,
Ching has become broadly acknowledged as one of Hong Kong’s most active
conceptual artists and has developed a discursive system of his own that,
paired with a witty sense of humor, responds and interrogates the cultural
and political collisions that occur in our city through the use of video and
ready-mades. He often oscillates between the roles of an artist and observer
within and beyond the city and creates artworks that transcend conventional
forms and restrictions by engaging in a variety of media in unique ways. Ching
currently reaches a large audience through his regular column in the Sunday
edition of the Ming Pao newspaper, which documents his public artworks in
the city and critical essays.

"Personification: Small Speaker is an unauthorized recording of
local councilors’ self-introduction broadcast through the speaker.
By means of personification, speaker is now the carrier of an
exchange – a non-human “human” pretending human speaking
human language in the form of small speaker now emerges
between streets and alleys."
