Chi Hoi

Chi Hoi began his career in 1996 as a self- taught artist producing drawings,
illustrations and comics for local media and has since acquired international
attention through his solo exhibitions in Hong Kong, Switzerland, Latvia
and Sweden. Born in Hong Kong in 1977, he received a degree from the
Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences at the Chinese University of
Hong Kong in 1999. Highlights of his work include “Textualizing Hong Kong”
exhibited at the 11th Venice Biennale in 2008, as well as Chihoi: New Dust
at Hong Kong’s Gallery EXIT in 2014. The artist is well known for his comic
albums, including the collaborative work Hijacking – Comic Hong Kong
Literature and The Train, both conceived in 2007. The latter presents a
collaboration with Taiwanese poet Hung Hung, in which Chi Hoi reconstructs
the poet’s fiction into an illustrated comic story. The Train illuminates
the development in Chi’s drawing and writing style, as well as the artist’s
recurring tendency to bridge poetry, literature and art together. His comics
have been translated into English, French, Italian and Finnish.

While the city is advancing forward in high speed, historical representations
across the city are being torn down one after another to
make room for skyscrapers and identical high-rises, abandoning
freedom and tradition for the sake of pursuing “more”.
