Kong Chun Hei

Born in Hong Kong in 1987, Kong Chun Hei graduated at the top of his class
with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in
2009. Concentrating mainly on fundamental drawing, his practice rejects the
conventional perspective on reality; his monochromatic drawings of everyday
objects are not mere imitations but are reflective of a state of mind. Kong lets
the subject dictate his markings on paper and the pen strokes derive from
his strenuous scrutiny of the details, requiring him to relearn the subject with
detachment so that every peculiarity is recorded in an attempt to liberate the
subject from symbolism. In his continual search for the intrinsic quality of the
object, intangible matters such as time have been touched upon and some of
his drawings have been translated into moving images and sound. Between
the viewers’ experience of the mimesis and their knowledge of the original,
Kong’s works imply that there is only here and now, and that everything else
is a manifestation of human imagination. Kong was awarded the Gaylord
Chan Painting Award, Cheung’s Fine Arts Award, Y.S. Hui Fine Arts Award and
Grotto Fine Art Ltd.’s award.
