Catalogue Note
This is the most comprehensive work on obstetrics published in Japan before the arrival of Western influence. The first seven volumes, on general obstetrics, describe placentation, abnormal births, the use of massage in obstetrics, obstetrical examination, and the positioning and preparation of the mother for delivery and post-partum care; there is an interesting illustration showing the Japanese equivalent of birthing-stools which were in common use in medieval Europe. The second section, volumes 8 to 10, is an amplification of Mizuhara's earlier atlas, the Sanka zushiki (1837), dealing with additional obstetrical instruments (such as forceps) and their use. The third section deals with prescriptions in obstetrical practice. Volume 12 shows the female reproductive anatomy, innervation of the pelvic region, structure and blood supply of the placenta, and the visceral connections of the umbilical cord in the baby.
The supplement contains a printed facsimile of a manuscript preface in Dutch, dated 1844.
