Catalogue Note

A contemporary sammelband of astronomical and mathematical offprints and pamphlets by Gauss (1777-1855), now considered one of the greatest mathematicians of modern times. His early interest in mathematics developed towards astronomy and physical science, and he became director of the Göttingen observatory in 1807, where he remained until his death. He also worked on geodesy, terrestrial magnetism, and non-Euclidean geometry. The papers in this volume cover planetary movements, capillarity and the calculus of variations, terrestrial magnetism, and the path of light through lenses. The last paper was given at the fiftieth anniversary of his doctorate, and contains his fourth proof of the fundamental theorem of algebra; his first publication in 1799 had contained his first proof.

Georg Rautter (1802-1885) was the bookbinder for Vienna university.
