Catalogue Note

FIRST EDITION. Maximilian I dictated this semi-autobiographical historical romance to his secretary, Treitzsaurwein, though much of the text was composed by Treitzsaurwein himself. Strict instructions were provided for the illustrations, regarding the costumes and content of each image, and many of the preliminary drawings, dating from 1514 to 1516, survive, though the book was never published at the time. The 236 woodcuts were found in the eighteenth century in Graz, with just 13 missing from the sequence, and the final scene was newly cut for this edition.

In this copy the text and plates are not interleaved. A later edition in 1799 also included a list of the plates and their location within the text.
