Catalogue Note

FIRST EDITION of Saavedra Fajardo's popular emblem book detailing the duties of a Christian prince, which was reprinted many times during the seventeenth century and translated into many languages. There is a variant with "residente in Baviera" on the title-page instead of "residente in Alemania", as here; the author was Philip IV's ambassador to the court of Maximilian I, elector of Bavaria. The fine title-page border includes a portrait of Philip IV on horseback.

The preface includes a fine illustration of a printing press, complete with inking balls. The errata leaves (not always present) are prefaced by the excuse that as the book was printed in Germany, the compositor was ignorant of Spanish.
