Catalogue Note
UNPUBLISHED. This waltz-song is quite different from any of the pieces Satie published under the name "Tendrement". Satie wrote this song for Pousse l'amour in 1905, a lost operetta he wrote in collaboration with Maurice de Féraudy and Jean Kolb. He composed the music between late 1905 and April 1906, but it survives only as a few drafts like this one. Indeed, de Féraudy's words for the operetta are completely lost, except for those recorded in Satie's early pencil sketch on the verso of the piano-waltz in C (see Lot 141 above). Other drafts & sketches for this waltz-song can be found at the Bibliothèque Nationale MS 9642 and in the Houghton Library 193; for some excerpts in piano score, see S.M. Whiting's book Satie the Bohemian: From Cabaret to Concert Hall, (1999), pp.318-319. The operetta was given at the Comédie-Royale on 22 April 1907, and revived for the autumn season and the next year in Nice and Monte Carlo.
