Catalogue Note

A superb portrait dating from the last year of Fanny's life.

Felix Mendelssohn's beloved sister Fanny (1805-1847), who married the gifted Berlin court painter Wilhelm Hensel (1794-1861) in 1829, died suddenly from a stroke in Berlin on May 14, 1847, as she was rehearsing her brother's Erste Walpurgisnacht cantata. Mendelssohn, overcome with grief passed away barely six months later. A more finished version of the portrait, signed by the artist and provided with a memorial text, is preserved in the Kupferstichkabinett der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin (WH 21/11).
