Catalogue Note
Tobias Haslinger took charge of the publisher Steiner and Co from 1826 and became in effect the leading publisher in Vienna for the next fifty years. He concentrated on producing high quality printed editions of major composers and at one point had a staff of over 50 employees as music engravers and printers. They produced a complete edition of music by Beethoven; many works by Schubert, including Schwanengesang; an almost complete run of music by Johann Strauss I and many of his family—including opp.95-278 of Johann Strauss II and 150 editions of Josef Strauss, including popular dance music by Joseph Lanner and Joseph Gungl. In the world of waltzes, gallops, marches and polkas Haslinger remained supreme. Tobias was succeeded by his son Carl and by the time the business was sold to the Berlin firm of Robert Lienau in 1875, they had published over 15,000 titles.
