Catalogue Note

FIRST EDITION of Chevreul's treatise on colour contrast, based on his lectures at the tapestry works Les Gobelins in 1836 and 1838, where he was trying to improve the colour fastness of wool dyes. His theories influenced the work of painters such as Eugène Delacroix and Georges Seurat.
