Catalogue Note

ATTRACTIVE AND NEAR-CONTEMPORARY DEPICTIONS IN KEY CAMPAIGNS AGAINST SWEDEN UNDER PETER THE GREAT. The capture of the fortress of Nöteborg in 1702 was crucial in making possible Peter's plan of building a new city on the Baltic; he even renamed the town Shlisselburg (key-city) in honour of its role in enabling the St Petersburg scheme. SUCH MATERIAL RELATING TO RUSSIA IS RARE ON THE MARKET.
