Catalogue Note

The binding is not labelled but it is most likely to be by Staggermeier and Welcher; it is almost identical to Davis Gift 198 in the British Library, dated to after 1799.

The plates in the Horace comprise ten scenes and a map of places relating to Horace and locations mentioned in his works. They were based on the paintings of Jakob Philipp Hackert, and published by his brother Georg, a print dealer in Rome.

The vignettes in the Vergil seem to be taken from a copy of Heyne's edition of Vergil, with engravings by Geyser after Fiorillo (possibly the London edition of 1793).

Loosely inserted in the Horace is a wrapper addressed to Sir John Forbes in Dalkeith, postmarked 1840, with a list of family members and their dates of birth and death.
