Catalogue Note
Carduino (1595-1650) was born in Geneva into a reformed family from Naples; he returned to Naples in 1619 and converted to Catholicism. His exaggerated and hyperbolic description of the Calvinist way of life in Geneva, dedicated to Philip III of Spain, circulated widely in manuscript, leading to a riposte by the Genevan resident Benedetto Turrettini.
A manuscript note by the compiler of the volume, on the verso of fol. 115, states that the following letters (the fourth and the fifth of the above-listed titles, of 1622) were [copied and] placed in the volume in 1659.
