Provenance
Inscribed to Max Jacob on front free endpaper and title, "A Max Jacob son ami Guillaume Apollinaire" and "A Max Jacob Souvenir du Bois des Buttes son ami Guillaume Apollinaire, 4 avril 1916". The double dedication apparently stems from the time when Apollinaire was serving in the army and could not find a copy of the book, it being out of stock at the publisher. Jacob sent Apollinaire his own copy which bore a presentation. Apollinaire kept the copy but when he again saw Jacob he reinscribed it. The Battle of Bois de Butte, was fought on 27 May 1918, the first day of the Third Battle of the Aisne in World War I.
