Catalogue Note
The title-page border by Ambrosius Holbein has a vignette at the top where Arminius and his "Germani" are shown defeating the legions of Varus in the Teutoburger forest. This episode became known only with the first publication of Tacitus's first six books in 1515; this 1519 edition was prepared by Beatus Rhenanus.
The woodcut world map in Macrobius is based on the one that appeared in the 1483 Brescia edition (see Shirley, The Mapping of the World, 13).
