Catalogue Note

This complete set comprises 7 volumes on historic writers, 41 volumes on modern writers, together with an index volume and a volume of supplement. It was financed by the government of the Republic.

The editor, Custodi (1771-1842), was a writer who was imprisoned for criticising in print Napoleon and the French during the Cisalpine Republic, though he later became reconciled to Napoleon following the occupation of Milan by Russian and Austrian forces in 1799-1800. Custodi's view of political economy was that it was "il modo di fare prosperare le nazioni, mediante il concorso dell'agricoltura, delle arti, delle manifatture, e del commercio" (the way for nations, through agriculture, the arts, manufacturing and business to prosper").
