Condition

The sculpture appears sound. There is some minor rubbing to some of the protruding elements of the bronze. There is a slight scratch to the figure's right thigh. There are one or two traces of casting residue in places, and there may be one or two very small spots of extremely minor oxidisation. There are a few spots of surface residue to the figure's right arm. Subject to the above, the work appears to be in very good overall condition, with a rich patina. The sculpture is freestanding. Catalogue Note

'I have never been influenced by any contemporary work; one does one’s work because it comes from inside and not because of anyone else. But in this case I was struck by Sidney Nolan’s series of paintings based on the infamous Australian bandit Ned Kelly with his black steel helmet' (the Artist, quoted in Tamsyn Woollcombe (ed.), Kenneth Armitage: Life and Work, The Henry Moore Foundation in association with Lund Humphries, London, 1977, p.44).
