Catalogue Note

Hendra Gunawan’s Fishermen On The Beach captures the lush tropical beauty of Indonesia. Ensconced by an ornate frame of blossoming verdure, its depiction of far reaching mountains and calm seas add a sense of tranquility to the work. Painted on the relatively rare medium of glass, this painting is a unique piece within his oeuvre. The medium further gifts an element of transparency to the figures, fulfilling his sentiment to unite them with the natural elements of the land. In addition, the nonabsorbent matter of glass highlights the artist’s bold and fluid brushstrokes, lending substantial volume and movement to the various elements of the painting, particularly the trees. An exemplary combination of creative talents and oil painting skills acquired from modern master painter Wahdi Sumanta, this beautiful landscape enhances the atmospheric mood of the tropical climate native to Indonesia. The presence of darker hues, set against the softer colors of the sea and distant hills, creates a gentle contrast that establishes a sense of depth and ambience in the painting, evoking an ethereal quality to the work.
