Catalogue Note

“We are going to release ourselves from the previous order that has decayed our society, and we dare to oppose the old views, characters, and elements, in order to set the flame of a new power."[1]

Such was the statement of the Gelanggang art society, of which Mochtar Apin was a notable cofounder. Reflective of the statement itself, Mochtar Apin’s approach towards art was a persistent quest dedicated to both progress and change. Adulated amongst his peers as a “multi-style” artist, he was celebrated for his creative and innovative tendencies which led him to develop various aesthetic styles throughout his artistic career.
