Catalogue Note

Hendra Gunawan’s paintings are imprinted in Indonesian history as some of the most treasurable images of daily life. As a social being that delighted in the quotidian happenings from the streets of his nation, Hendra documents everyday moments to express the humanity and humility within. The present painting, Penjual Bunga (Flower Vendors), exemplifies Hendra’s reverence for femininity, the feminine beauty, and maternity, which is consistently featured in his paintings through various expressions.

Hendra depicts a close up of three women amid a bed of flowers enraptured by the perfume of fresh blooms, which evokes the famous Three Graces painting by the Flemish Baroque painter Rubens. Composed in an unusual vertical format, he creates a dialogue with the faces and gestures of the three women. They unravel in a sinuous curve from top to bottom, emphasising the inherent feminine quality of this painting.

Furthermore, the artist’s penchant for detail is illustrated in the minutiae of this work, evident in the women’s clothing and bright petals. His rhythmic and sinuous brushstrokes applied from a restrictive colour palette provide the painting with a whimsical sense of movement and liveliness. Hendra immortalizes these women as numinous, charmed creatures in nature.

Evident in this painting, Hendra rejoiced in monumentalizing the exquisiteness of Indonesian women, always depicted as active individuals so full of capacity and strength. In this simple exchange, the artist notices their ability to support one another, foster meaningful relationships and demonstrate profound maternity as they go about their day. At once elusive and approachable, these women are absolutely enchanting.  For Hendra, while community initiates life, it is his women who initiate the binds that perpetuate it.
