Catalogue Note
"Affandi's aesthetic attitude, which was reflected in his remarks, is the opposite of the aesthetic attitudes derived from these Kant-based theories. Affandi's statements revealed no distance between the mind-set and the aesthetic experience. The remark that clearly stated that he was a naturalist showed his mind-set. His statement, "I want to capture the signs of the natural forces, but I can never capture them completely," reflects his perception, which can be read as his "standard" for aesthetic experience. Meanwhile, the comment, "When I paint, I always want to become one with the object I paint. I lose myself, and then there is a feeling as if I'm going to fight against something", reveals his aesthetic attitude."
