Catalogue Note
Leo Craste was a French aquarellist painter, member of the Colonial Society of French Artists, as well as a regular writer and illustrator for French newspapers. He worked for the periodical “Bulletin des Amis du Vieux Hue” that focused on Vietnamese culture, society, and history.
The present work is a watercolor that depicts the sampans together on the boat quay of the Chinese arroyo in Saigon, which is now known as Ho Chi Min City. The artist’s lyrical composition invokes a moment of tranquility and calm from the daily lives of the villagers. The work harks back to an era where Vietnam was celebrated as “The Pearl of the Far East”, and is a window into a world that no longer exists today.
