Catalogue Note

Prabha is best known for her graceful and elongated figures of women. In particular her characters often depict the female form with a pensive and enchanting demeanour. She was greatly influenced by the lives of rural women and started painting at a time when India had few female artists; her inspiration was Amrita Sher-Gil. In this period of her oeuvre she painted canvases that were dominant in single colours, which were unusually passionate and a retreat from her characteristically earthly and warm palette. The vibrant hue of teal in this case intensifies the floating sea green body, giving the work a ethereal presence.
