Condition
The image is not completely accurate : the mahogany has a very attractive reddish tone. Scratches and marks all throughout the mahogany surface due to age and handling, as well as a few chips. Structure is sound and sturdy. Upholstery with a little wear. Very fine carving, architectural and large-sized armchair. Imposing look. To recommend.

Catalogue Note
Ce fauteuil présente de nombreuses similitudes avec le modèle livré en 1812 par Jacob-Desmalter pour le grand cabinet de l'Empereur au palais des Tuileries (aujourd'hui conservé au Mobilier National) : appelé "fauteuil de prince", son dessin fut conçu par les architectes Charles Percier et Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine et revu par Jacques-Louis David et Dominique-Vivant Denon (ill. in J.P. Samoyault, Mobilier français Consulat et Empire, Paris, 2009, p. 174, fig. 287). Comme cet illustre modèle, notre fauteuil comporte un dossier plat sommé d'une accolade sculptée de rinceaux et des supports d'accotoir en carquois terminés par des pieds fuselés bagués : il n'est pas improbable que le peintre David, en raison de son implication dans la conception du modèle, en ait possédé un exemplaire.
