Description

  • ink and pigment on vellum
c.157x110mm, paper, i+44+i leaves, ends imperfect, with ONE HEADPIECE and LARGE DECORATED INITIALS, 13 lines (c.95x65mm), very slight spotting, late 17th-century red morocco gilt over wooden boards, the Annunciation in the centre of the upper cover, the arms of the Russian order of St Andrew on the lower, spine slightly cracked, two clasps and catches, red edges

The Order of St Andrew, founded by Peter the Great in 1698 in honour of the first apostle and patron saint of Russia, was the highest-ranking and most prestigious Imperial Order.
