Catalogue Note

Traditionally a fishing port, Monastir is located at the tip of a small peninsula on the eastern coast of Tunisia, about 100 miles south of Tunis.  The ruins of Ruspinium, a Phoenecian and Roman settlement are located just to the west of the city.  Monastir is distinguished by its well-preserved Ribat which was founded in 180 CE and looks out over the sea.
