Description

  • Figures with running horses
  • oil on panel

Condition

Painted on a thick uncradled poplar panel which is bowed from top to bottom. The paint surface is well preserved and there is nice thick impasto throughout. There are two unpainted diagonal areas, at lower right and left, and an unpainted horizontal strip along the top. The panel was probably originally an inset and these areas are now visible in its current frame which would not have been original to the piece. There is some unevenness to the panel surface which can be seen at top of the composition but this is not too distracting. Under UV: there are some scattered, small isolated retouches with two slightly larger areas on the rump of the horse at lower center, and on the body of the horse upper center to the left of the man's outstretched arm. Offered in a gilt wood frame with elaborately carved corners.
