The canvas is unlined and well stretched and the painting overall presents a strong image. The paint surface is clean beneath a clear, fresh varnish with some areas of abrasion and thinness to the darks, notably in the prostrate figure, lower center. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals scattered minor retouches, particularly concentrated in the sky and right edge. There is some minor strengthened definition to the horse, lower right, and to lines of the armor of the rider in the foreground at right. There is an infilled and repainted loss of approximately 1 inch in the upper left hand corner. The painting requires no further work and is ready to hang in its present state. Offered in a simply carved black and gilt wood frame.
