The canvas appears to be unlined. Under an uneven and dull old varnish. The overall paint surface has been very well preserved with lovely retention of the details, and nice thick impasto in flesh tones and hair. There are some minor scuffs and abrasions at the edges. Examination under UV light reveals some small vertical retouches in the dark shadowed area of his hair on right side and in background at center left. Some other small inpaints to craquelure can be seen here and there as well. Offered in an elaborately carved and gilt wood frame.
