Condition
The painting overall is in good condition and is ready to hang. The panel is made up of two horizontal boards, beveled on all four edges, and is flat and stable. The paint surface overall is in good condition, there is a little wear in the darks at the left side but the figure and animals in the foreground are nicely preserved.
Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals minor retouched losses scattered in the background and sky and some sensitively applied retouches scattered through the group of animals in the foreground.
The painting is ready to hang in its present state and requires no further work.
Offered in a decoratively carved gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note
This Arcadian landscape by Berchem may be identified with the entries listed by C. Hofstede de Groot (see literature) as his catalogue numbers 631 and 631a. He listed descriptions of two paintings by Berchem known through two different Eighteenth century sales (see provenance) which were both on panel, of about the same size and of the same subject. These two references he considered to relate most probably to the same painting.
