Description

  • An abbot or bishop saint, possibly one of the four Latin Fathers of the Church, half-length, writing in a book with a quill-pen
  • oil on copper

Condition

The catalogue illustration is quite representative of the painting. The support is made up of a single thick copper plate, mounted onto a wooden stretcher. The painting has been cleaned and restored relatively recently, and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultra-violet reveals some retouchings in the background and peripheral areas; a repaired vertical damage, measuring approx. 6cm., just to the right of the saint's ear; a larger repaired damage, running horizontally from just below the saint's mouth, through the quill he holds, and across to the left side. The more concentrated areas of restoration occur in the background centre left and upper right. All restoration has been sensitively carried out and is not visible to the naked eye. Much of the figure of the saint is beautifully preserved, particularly his face and beard. Despite the aforementioned areas of retouching, the painting appears in good condition overall, with little or no sign of wear. The Salvator Rosa style frame with carved gilt mouldings and twisted ribbon along the inner sight is in good condition, with only minor knocks.
