Description

  • Michele Marieschi
  • Venice, a view of Santa Maria della Salute and the entrance to the Grand Canal, looking east
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has been relined and is slightly buckled at upper center. The surface is under a yellowed varnish. Overall the painting is nicely preserved; it reads well and presents a large, impressive and very decorative image. There are some old discolored restorations that can be seen with the naked eye in the upper sky, on two repaired tears in clouds at center, and another area on buildings at left side and down into the water. Some minor scuffing at the edges. Examination under UV light reveals retouching to areas as mentioned. There is some other retouching in clouds at upper left corner, on the architecture at left, and at the lower corners. The Salute, figures and quay at right side look good. This painting could certainly be hung in its present state, however re-addressing of some of the old and now discolored retouches would improve the overall appearance. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

This composition repeats Marieschi's original in the Musée du Louvre  (inv. 162). The canvas is of the same size as the large Louvre prototype, which was long regarded as by Canaletto. Its popularity is apparent given the numerous extant copies of varying sizes.
