Condition
The painting has an old glue relining that is firm and stable. The surface is under an uneven and dull varnish and is slightly pressed from the relining. In general the paint surface has been well retained and the figure reads well. Under UV light: it is difficult to see through the old varnish. There are some retouches that appear to be on top of the varnish and these include some areas on the jacket and collar, and some reinforcement of the pupils of his eyes. This painting could be hung as is, however some of these retouches are visible to the naked eye and, though not too distracting, could be made less noticeable.
In an elaborately carved and gilt wood frame.
